PORTSMOUTH FESTIVITIES 2015 LAUNCHES

The Portsmouth Festivities announces its 16th festival programme at today’s press launch at the new Sixth Form Centre at The Portsmouth Grammar School. From Friday 19 to Sunday 28 June, Portsmouth plays host to one of the most vibrant summer festivals on the south coast:

  • internationally acclaimed artists
  • showcasing stunning local talent
  • FREE activities and events
  • something for all ages

The Festivities is Portsmouth’s flagship multi-disciplinary arts festival. Now in its 16th year, the programme continues to develop and grow, with a fantastic mix of concerts, dance, exhibitions, plays and outdoor events planned for 10 days at the end of June.

Opening the Festivities this year will be the wonderful LONDON MOZART PLAYERS who will be joined by British cellist LAURA VAN DER HEIJDEN who was awarded the BBC Young Musician of the Year award in 2012.

Monday 22 June will see the mighty PEATBOG FAERIES perform a truly unique gig on the deck of HMS Warrior in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. Fusing folk, electronica, rock and jazz with traditional Celtic music, they have received awards for ‘Live Band of the Year’ at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and Scottish Traditional Music Awards. This special ‘shin-dig’ will be supported by multi-instrumentalist folk duo GREG RUSSELL & CIARAN ALGAR, who were awarded the BBC Radio 2 ‘Young Folk’ Award in 2013 and Horizon Award for ‘Best Breakthrough Act’ in 2014.

Sunday 28 June will present the final of the second annual songwriting competition ALL ABOUT THE SONG in association with The Cellars at Eastney, Express FM, Portsmouth News and Wedgewood Rooms.  It’s an exciting search for the region’s greatest singer-songwriters. The winner will be offered studio time to record their song at Air Studios in London.

Portsmouth Festivities are thrilled to have commissioned the world premiere of a brand new dance spectacular, in partnership with Stopgap Dance Company and Curious Space, with live music from The Moulettes. THE SEAFARERS brings together professional and community dancers to tell the story of shipbuilding in Portsmouth through music and motion. The project is sponsored by The Portsmouth Grammar School, with funding from Arts Council England and support from organisations including National Museum of Royal Navy, Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust, International Boatbuilding Training Centre, St George’s Church and Ampersand.

Portsmouth is also privileged to welcome acclaimed author ANDY MULLIGAN, National Poet of Wales GILLIAN CLARKE and internationally renowned acappella superstars THE SWINGLE SINGERS - along with many more inspiring thinkers, creators and performers.

So, bring along your family and friends and join in the fun as Portsmouth bursts into life with arts and culture this summer! Public booking opens on Monday 27 April.
